Editor’s note: This is the second of a two-part series showcasing destinations that stand apart and should be considered for either a return trip or a first look.
Earlier this month, GolfTravelWire.com published the first of a two-part series on some of the United States’ most distinct golf courses and resorts. We decided to make it a series because it’s really difficult to limit the scope to just five. And even 10 is difficult, so, who knows, there might be a third or fourth part.
Whether golfers are seeking gorgeous natural settings, impeccable course conditions or renowned course architects, here are five more courts and resorts that offer something for nearly everyone.
BIG CEDAR LODGE, RIDGEDALE, MISSOURI
In 1987, Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris purchased Devil’s Pool Guest Ranch. From the day he purchased it, he was committed to one primary goal: to transform the ranch into a destination for families and friends.
Renamed Big Cedar Lodge, this destination would be unlike any other though. It would enable guests to connect in the great outdoors — in a way they arguably can’t at any other resort.
“At Big Cedar Lodge, natural beauty and conservation are celebrated and showcased through everything we do,” says Matt McQueary, director of golf sales and marketing.
This dedication is apparent through five of its six award-winning golf courses, which have been certified as Audubon International Signature Sanctuary locations. Only the recently opened Cliffhangers (an 18-hole, par-three course) has yet to receive this designation. Although, based on its natural beauty and the resort’s commitment to conservation, it likely will soon.
“We are a one-of-a-kind resort dedicated not only to preserving the soul of the wilderness, but in restoring your soul as well,” Morris says.
CRYSTAL SPRINGS RESORT, HAMBURG, NEW JERSEY

Without question, Crystal Springs Resort provides the best of both worlds. It’s only located one hour from New York City. Yet, it’s also relatively secluded, as it’s nestled along the edge of the Appalachian Mountains.
“Few golf destinations can match the warm, welcoming splendor of Crystal Springs with the proximity to a major metropolitan hub,” says Art Walton, vice president of golf operations.
Considered one of the Northeast’s leading golf destinations, Crystal Springs has six top-rated courses, including Ballyowen, a Celtic links style course that’s been rated New Jersey’s number one public course. Each course — four have 18 holes, while two have nine holes — is renowned for three key aspects too: its lush fairways, pristine greens and popular architects.
“Designed by such notable luminaries as Robert von Hagge, Robert Trent Jones and Roger Rulewich, the resort’s courses are the foundation of an array of inimitable offerings — for both day golfers and golf and stay visitors,” Walton says. “We’re proud to book 160,000-plus daily fee rounds annually.”
HORSESHOE BAY RESORT, HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS
Unfortunately, a lot of golfers “consider Texas to be arid, boring and flat,” according to director of golf Anthony Holder. However, that opinion dissipates as soon as they visit Horseshoe Bay Resort.
Why? Well, for starters, its location (the Hill Country) is anything but flat. Moreover, the resort is located on the gorgeous Lake LBJ. Consequently, Horseshoe Bay has a floating pool, a marina, a waterfront restaurant and a yacht club, too.
To further separate the resort from others in The Lone Star State, Horseshoe Bay’s three 18-hole championship courses have tropical landscaping and several native Texas stone features.
“Our Apple Rock, Ram Rock and Slick Rock courses brilliantly showcase the elevations and natural beauty surrounding them,” Holder says. “But they also each have their own character.”
To showcase each course’s natural splendor and distinctiveness, the resort is hosting the Golf Channel’s 24th season of Big Break this year.
“The natural beauty and amazing variety is going to be an eye-opener for a lot of people,” Holder says.
THE BROADMOOR GOLF CLUB, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO

For years, The Broadmoor Golf Club has served as a host site for numerous professional golf tournaments. And for good reason.
After all, the club has two beautiful, immaculate courses, designed by two of the most celebrated course architects of all time: Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr. In all, nine USGA championships have occurred at The Broadmoor, including the 1959 and 1967 U.S. Amateurs and the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open.
“The East and West Courses have challenged and delighted players of all skill levels,” says Russ Miller, director of golf. “Regardless of golfers’ handicaps, they’ll find The Broadmoor’s courses challenging and enjoyable, with tee markers of varying lengths on both courses.”
Providing nearly perfect weather from May to October, The Broadmoor also has more than 300 days of sunshine every year.
“The East Course was one of only 12 North American and Caribbean golf courses to receive a five-star rating by Golf Digest in 2022 too,” Miller adds.
TUNICA NATIONAL GOLF AND TENNIS, TUNICA, MISSISSIPPI
Located in the heart of Mississippi, Tunica National has especially become known for its genuine Southern hospitality. In fact, according to general manager David Cage, the course consistently offers guests a welcoming atmosphere from the moment they first arrive.
Aside from its hospitable environment, Tunica National is also renowned for its pristine 18 holes that feature impeccably conditioned greens and fairways. From day to day, all year long, guests know they’ll be enjoying outstanding course conditions, leading to each hole’s visual appeal.
“Our team works diligently year-round to ensure the course remains in top condition,” Cage said. “And we strive to provide a level of service that makes every guest feel welcome, whether they are visiting for a single round or an extended golf trip.”
Along with its visual appeal, golfers are intrigued by the championship course’s strategically interesting layout. According to Cage, it’s both challenging and enjoyable for players of all skill levels.
“As a result, Tunica National has become a memorable stop in the Mid-South region,” Cage says.
