EHRWALD, Austria — Nestled at the base of the imposing Wetterstein Mountains between the picturesque towns of Ehrwald and Lermoos in Tyrol, Golfclub Tiroler Zugspitze offers a unique golfing experience. Surrounded by stunning alpine scenery, this meticulously maintained nine-hole course sits on a flat high plateau, making it an accessible and enjoyable walk for players of all skill levels.

With separate tee boxes for the front and back nines, the course seamlessly transforms into a full 18-hole experience. The front nine, named “Zugspitze,” plays as a par 36 measuring up to 3,284 yards, while the back nine, “Sonnenspitze,” offers a distinct challenge at 3,283 yards.
As Daniel Ortner-Bauer, club manager, head greenkeeper and pro, said: “Golfclub Tiroler Zugspitze — lovingly known as ‘Zugspitzgolf’ by our regulars — offers a fair challenge for beginners and experienced golfers. The fairways are set in the flat valley basin of Ehrwald. You really have to focus on your game, though, as the panoramic views of the Zugspitze and Sonnenspitze are easily distracting.”
The round starts directly below the modern clubhouse — home to reception, a pro shop and a welcoming restaurant — with a dogleg-right par 4 that requires a well-placed tee shot to avoid bunkers guarding the left side, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Zugspitze massif. Strategic variety defines the entire layout: Golfers encounter risk-and-reward opportunities on par-5 holes, such as the second hole, where players must choose between a conservative lay-up beside wooden barns or a long carry over a meandering stream to reach the sloped green.
Precision remains paramount throughout the round. On the par-3 third hole, shots must clear a pond cutting directly across the line of play, while subsequent fairways weave through natural wetlands, native trees and strategically placed sand traps. Unique local touches charm players along the way, including a whimsical sculpture of submerged golf clubs in a pond on the sixth hole.

The layout culminates in a memorable 560-yard, double-dogleg final hole. Here, golfers face a decisive choice: Playsafely between flanking fairway bunkers or attempt a daring shortcut over out-of-bounds terrain to reach a kidney-shaped green protected by four bunkers and thick rough.
Beyond intelligent hole design, the course stands out for its environmental harmony and pristine conditions. Addressing the club’s agronomic philosophy, Ortner-Bauer said: “Tiroler Zugspitzgolf benefits from a natural locational advantage. Our peat and clay soil retains water effectively, thereby creating the foundation for a healthy golf course. Our team prioritizes turf maintenance that works in harmony with nature.”
Combining a scenic landscape, thoughtful architecture and warm Tyrolean hospitality, Golfclub Tiroler Zugspitze delivers an unforgettable alpine retreat for every golfer.
Beyond the fairways, the region offers world-class attractions. Visitors can ascend Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, via cable car from either the Austrian or German side for sweeping alpine views. Just across the border in Germany, history and nature await: Explore King Ludwig II’s iconic Neuschwanstein Castle — the inspiration for Disney’s Magic Kingdom castle — and neighboring Hohenschwangau Castle, or marvel at the roaring waters of the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen.
