Ahead of this year’s Solheim Cup, Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, Netherlands, has rapidly climbed European golf rankings.
In just over a decade, owner Robert van der Wallen and general manager Sabine Riezebos have made a premium customer experience the hallmark of Bernardus Golf.
Even designer Kyle Phillips, president of Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design, explained his approach as follows: “Fortunately, our clients share my philosophy that designing and building a golf course involves much more than simply putting together 18 holes for a round of 72 strokes. Rather, it is about creating a unique guest experience.”
This combination has resulted in a pay-and-play venue setting new standards not only for the Netherlands, but for Europe.
A round at Bernardus makes you a “member for a day.” Upon arrival, golfers are welcomed into a hotel-style reception area with hot coffee readily available. Non-golfing partners are welcome to join, having access to all non-golf facilities such as the pool or gym at no extra charge.
The golf at Bernardus demands strategic play across undulating fairways, and water is a frequent hazard. The eighth hole gained popularity in “Beat the Pro” competitions at KLM Opens on the DP World Tour, as the par-3 wraps around a lake from tee to green.

However, its the final two holes that Bernardus is known for, featuring several water crossings, punishing bunkers, and views of the local church.
Around Bernardus, views are enjoyed on and off the course. Both restaurants on property – the golf-oriented Bernadus Cafe and the Michelin-starred Noble Kitchen – are situated on what Gault&Millau deemed 2024’s “Terrace of the Year.”
Bernardus aims to create “a day of lasting memories” for golfers and guests, which can be made complete through a stay at Bernardus Lodge. Eight double rooms, a tennis court, gym, sauna and access to both personal training and massage appointments make the Lodge a perfect compliment to the golf experience.
A challenging course design and a dedication to the customer have placed Bernardus on the map in the world of professional golf. A three-time host for the KLM Open, Bernardus is preparing to be the first course in the Netherlands to host the Solheim Cup this September.
When reflecting on what’s next for Bernardus, Riezebos says, “Our ambition is to make this course a bucket list course such as Kingsbarns, another Kyle Phillips design. We do not only think 2026, we think 2027, 2028 and beyond.”
