OBERAU, Germany — Framed by the majestic Zugspitze, this historic Bavarian course offers a harmonious blend of scenic splendor, strategic architecture and authentic regional hospitality. Nestled at the base of Germany’s highest mountain, Golfclub Garmisch-Partenkirchen presents a compelling fusion of deep alpine heritage and contemporary golf design.
Founded in 1929 with its original course opening in 1930, the club navigated significant midcentury chapters — including post-World War II oversight by U.S. armed forces — before its members resolved in the early 1970s to construct a new facility at Gut Buchwies near Oberau. Initially launched as a nine-hole course in 1974, the layout expanded to a full 18-hole championship facility in 1990. Today, it stands out for offering a remarkably level, easily walkable topography despite its high alpine environment, granting players unbroken vistas of the Zugspitze massif.
“Our golf course tells a remarkable story — from its beginnings in 1928 to the modern championship course it is today,” says Lorenz Heinzinger, president of Golfclub Garmisch-Partenkirchen.”Surrounded by the majestic Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, we have created a destination where outstanding golf, breathtaking scenery and genuine Bavarian hospitality come together. Through continuous investment in quality, sustainability and our guests’ experience, we strive to ensure that every visitor leaves with the feeling of having discovered one of Europe’s true hidden treasures,”
Stretching between 5,711 and 6,732 yards across four tee sets, the par-72 championship course is thoughtfully organized into two distinct nine-hole loops. The front nine opens with a gentle dogleg-left par 5 of up to 524 yards, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Zugspitze. Historical echoes remain embedded in the landscape, notably on the fourth hole, where an ancient boundary stone marks the historic frontier between the Electorate of Bavaria and the County of Werdenfels.
While the front loop emphasizes tactical positioning — culminating in a single, well-bunkered par 3 at the eighth hole — the back nine delivers a dynamic mix of three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s. Burns and water hazards come into play on key holes like the 13th and 16th, while the round concludes with an unusual, high-stakes, 175-yard, par-3 18th hole situated directly alongside the clubhouse restaurant terrace.

Although functioning primarily as a classic members’ club, Golfclub Garmisch-Partenkirchen extends warm hospitality to international golfers and vacationers exploring Upper Bavaria. The club provides high-quality equipment rentals for travelers without gear, while guests staying at partner hotels benefit from discounted green fees. Thoughtful touches — such as mobile beverage service during warm summer rounds, a well-curated pro shop and a scenic sun terrace — reinforce the club’s guest-focused philosophy.
“Our club was built on a remarkable legacy, but our vision has always been focused on the future,” Heinzinger says. “Every investment we make, every improvement to the course, and every guest we welcome reflects our commitment to creating an extraordinary golfing experience. Surrounded by the majestic Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, and the spectacular Bavarian Alps, visitors discover far more than an exceptional golf course — they discover a destination where tradition, nature and world-class golf come together in perfect harmony.”
Off the course, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region has much to offer as well. Visitors can stroll through the lovely city center, explore one of Europe’s most modern and prestigious ski jumping venues or explore the amazing Partnach Gorge. And, of course, a good German beer in one the many beer gardens is always a great option to sit down and enjoy the marvelous views of the Alps.
