Finland’s rock star of golf

For the longest time, the term par-3 course evoked images of well-worn practice loops or neglected pitch-and-putt facilities. However, that is rapidly changing.

A new destination in Siuntio, Finland, is single-handedly dismantling this stereotype. Located just 40 minutes from Helsinki Airport, Rock Golf opened its doors in mid-2025 with an audacious mission: to become the best par-3 course in the world.

For the traveling golfer, this isn’t just another round, it’s a masterclass in modern golf design and premium hospitality.

A Design That Demands Respect

Designed by renowned European course architect Lassi Pekka Tilander, whose portfolio includes some of Continental Europe’s top-ranked courses, Rock Golf is a stunning 9-hole layout integrated seamlessly into the rugged, rock-strewn landscape near the Baltic Sea.

With holes ranging from a delicate 88 yards to a formidable 245 yards, this is real golf. It tests every iron in the bag and demands the same strategic precision as a major championship venue.

The project was born from a distinct vision of quality over quantity. As Kari Karvinen, owner of Rock Golf, says: “We only had space for a nine-hole par-3 course, so we made a conscious decision to turn that constraint into an opportunity. From the very beginning, we set out to create something truly special — something different. We respect the traditions of golf, but we also wanted to challenge them, to push boundaries and stand out. The ambition was always to deliver a golf course that is both technically and qualitatively at the highest level and also fun to play.”

The Quality Strategy: Attention to Detail

What sets Rock Golf apart is its uncompromising focus on the guest experience. While many resorts treat the short course as an add-on, Rock Golf treats it as the flagship.

This philosophy is evident in its all-inclusive approach to equipment: Every player is provided with high-end Takomo irons and Otso putters — premium Finnish brands usually only available online — free of charge for their round.

This commitment to excellence is a core pillar of the management’s strategy.

“Rock Golf is defined by a simple idea,” Andrea Nyman, CEO of Rock Golf, said. “We didn’t set out to just open a golf course, but to build an experience where everything is done properly — without compromising on quality. We pay close attention to even the smallest details and constantly challenge ourselves to exceed our guests’ expectations and offer something truly different.”

Beyond the pristine greens and rocky vistas, Rock Golf addresses the biggest hurdle in modern golf — time. A full 9-hole round can be completed in about 90 minutes. This makes it an ideal destination for young professionals, families or travelers who want a world-class golf experience without sacrificing their entire day.

The facility is also a pioneer in brand positioning. By focusing on a lifestyle approach rather than just a scorecard, Rock Golf has created a social atmosphere that feels fresh and inviting. Whether you are a low-handicapper looking to sharpen your iron play or a family introducing the next generation to the game, the lack of traditional barriers — and the presence of high-quality infrastructure — makes every visit memorable.

Finland is quickly becoming a hidden gem for European golf, and Rock Golf is its most innovative ambassador. It proves that a short course can be just as prestigious, challenging and rewarding as a traditional 18-hole championship layout.

Although still new to the market, the venue and Nyman have already been acclaimed Golf Act of the Year and ‘Golf Leader of the Year, respectively, by the Finnish Golf Union.
