During World War II, Royal Air Force pilot P.B. “Laddie” Lucas used his knowledge of the Kent coastline to guide his heavily damaged Spitfire to a safe landing on the very links where he was born. Decades later, Prince’s Golf Club is honoring that history with its newest championship layout.
The Sandwich Bay, England, club has announced “The Laddie,” a new 18-hole composite course developed in collaboration with The R&A and golf course architects Mackenzie & Ebert.

The layout integrates elements from the club’s three existing nine-hole loops, combining five holes from The Himalayas, six from The Shore, and seven from The Dunes. Prince’s, which hosted the 1932 Open Championship and will host the 2030 Walker Cup, will open the routing to golfers at select times of the year. The course will also serve as the layout for select future championships.
The composite project follows structural investments to the property, including restored natural sandscapes, extended fairways, and altered rough management designed to create firmer, faster links conditions. The club previously received England’s Golf Course of the Year award in 2025 following updates to its pre-war heritage layout.
“The goal of ‘The Laddie’ is to create a home for championship golf at Prince’s while maintaining the essence of the whole property,” said Rob McGuirk, general manager of Prince’s Golf Club.
Off the course, the facility has completed a clubhouse refurbishment, added Toptracer technology to the driving range, and opened an Odyssey putting studio. The club also plans to renovate its on-site lodging facility, The Lodge at Prince’s, which contains 38 en-suite bedrooms.
