Bermuda for golf and culture

Gateway: Hamilton

Bermuda has more golf courses for its size than any other country

Bermuda's heritage runs deep: Bermuda's 400 year-old history reveals ties with the West Indies, West Africa, Ireland, and Portugal, yet it is its English heritage that runs deepest. Proper teas with scones are laid out each afternoon at the hotels, cricket and soccer are national passions and in the tonier places like The Reefs and Cambridge Beaches, jacket and tie for evening dinner is desirable.

Popular with artists:
Over the years, Bermuda has attracted artists and writers such as Mark Twain, Noel Coward, James Thurber, Eugene OíNeill and John Lennon. For a look at the art scene, visit some of the local galleries such as the Regal Art Gallery in Hamilton and The Bermuda Craft Market at Dockyard.
Golf courses abound: Home to more golf courses per square miles than anywhere in the world, golf is played year-round. Many have been designed by course architects like Charles Banks, Deveraux Emmett, Robert Trent Jones, and Charles Blair Macdonald.

Green fees and access: As many courses are private clubs and equipment like clubs, balls and carts have to be imported to the island, greens fees tend to be on the high side of $100 or more. For access to private clubs, you will probably need a letter of introduction from your home club unless you know a member or stay at a hotel which has an agreement with the club. And bring golf balls: a dozen can cost $66 on the island.

Location & climate: Although often associated with the Caribbean, Bermuda is located 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Yet Bermuda enjoys a mild semitropical climate with temperatures ranging from 68 to 84 degrees. Winter may be a little chilly for swimming but warm enough for sun bathing.

Getting around Bermuda: There are no rental cars. Most travel via taxis, bus, ferries and bicycles. Mopeds can be rented but before you head out to the roads, you should know what youíre doing. These are not for the new rider or the timid. If you're going to be transporting your golf clubs, the motor scooters work better.

Bermuda's government:
Bermuda is the worldís oldest British colony and its legal and legislative bodies are fashioned after Great Britainís. At weekly Parliamentary debates, the custom of wearing wigs and gowns for official occasions is still practiced.

Walk the Rail Trail: For off-course fun, we suggest you walk the Railway Trail, a 21 mile track that goes along the coast from St. Georgeís Island to Somerset, almost from one end of the island to the other.

Golf packages:
Golf Packages are offered by most resorts including the Pink Beach Club, Cambridge Beaches and Elbow Beach Resort. A good deal for golfers who donít need a big beach, the Pompano Beach Club is located a nine iron shot from the Port Royal Golf Course. Golf Packages typically include golf, accommodations and participation in a dine-around program airport transfers, greens fees, and service charges and taxes.

Bermuda, a coral-tinted island gem: Bermuda is one of the most squeaky clean, least congested places on earth. Enjoy coral-tinted beaches, yearíround temperate climate, eight superb golf courses and accommodations ranging from large resorts such as the Elbow Beach and the Fairmont Southampton Princess to candy-colored cottages like the Pink Beach Club, the Reefs where youíll find one of the best beaches on the island and Cambridge Beaches, quiet, secluded with several little cove beaches and a spa. Ask about romance and golf packages. KD
